Papers of John F. Haskins, 1960-1990.

The John F. Haskins Papers document his scholarly research in the fields of Asiatic Art, Architecture, and Archaeology, as well as the components of some of the courses which he taught as a professor in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Pittsburgh. The bulk of the material is not dated although much of the correspondence dates from 1987 through 1991. The Haskins Papers are comprised of four series: Course Material, Subject Files, Bibliography of Articles relating to Haskins' research, and maps. The Course Material (FF 1-10), shows the different range of courses taught by John Haskins at the University of Pittsburgh. The materials contained in this series include bibliographies, library reserve lists, and dittos which were probably used as handouts. The Subject Files (FF 11-165) are arranged alphabetically in keeping with the original order of the papers. This series consists of correspondence, articles, typed notes, handwritten notes, translations, and articles written in Chinese and Russian. The Bibliography of Articles relating to Haskins' research (FF 166-169) contains articles written by Haskins and others. The articles have been placed in alphabetical order according to author. Not all of the citations are complete, due to the lack of the information on the articles. These articles are primarily written in English, but there are articles in Russian, German, and Chinese. The individual titles of the Chinese and Russian articles are not listed in the bibliography, and are found in the end of the series. The Map series (FF 170) is comprised of photocopied maps from texts and commercially produced maps. The photocopied maps have additions which were drawn on them by Haskins. The remainder of this series contains 59 commercially produced maps, 51 of which were produced by the National Geographic Society. These maps have been removed from the John F. Haskins Papers and placed in Hillman Library's Map Collection, where they can be properly stored. The Finding AId has a complete list of these maps and their corresponding location code, if available. Photographs and negatives (FF 19, 35, 76, 82, 124, and 140) that were found in these papers have been returned to the Fine Arts Department at the request of Professor Katheryn Linduff, and can be found in room 128 of the Frick Fine Arts Building. Photocopies of the photographs and negatives were used to replace the originals that were removed from the collection, and a notation on the Finding Aid indicates their existence. A piece of mummy cloth, dating possibly from the 12th dynasty, was also returned and placed in room 128.
